The Ugandan government has identified tourism as one of its key drivers for economic growth, aiming to increase the economy tenfold from $50 billion to $500 billion by 2040. The Minister of Finance presented the budget for the 2024/2025 financial year, allocating UGX 289.6 billion ($78 billion) to tourism development programs.
These funds will support international and domestic marketing, modernize tourism products, and upgrade infrastructure such as the Source of the Nile pier and the Uganda Museum. Additionally, UGX 55 billion ($14.8 million) has been allocated to promote Uganda abroad and attract more investors. Conservation efforts will also receive funding, including the construction of electric fences and boundary surveillance in wildlife protected areas. The government has also allocated funds for road rehabilitation, aviation infrastructure, and maritime sector development, as well as support for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
The recognition of tourism as a key economic driver is expected to have a positive impact on the country’s economy, creating jobs and stimulating local economic growth.
With its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, Uganda is well-positioned to become a major tourist destination in Africa, and this investment is expected to pay off in the long run.
