The Karuma Bridge reopens to traffic after a three-week closure for essential maintenance, including the installation of expansion joints. This crucial link in northern Uganda had caused significant detours for motorists.
Maintenance works, confirmed by the Ministry of Works and Transport, included adding reflective plates and street lights. While open, minor works such as guardrail installation and lighting enhancements continue without traffic disruption.
This is the second closure in less than a year, following a thorough rehabilitation last December. The government plans to construct a new bridge with support from JICA, costing around Shs 121 billion and taking 60 months.
